Three Steps to Create Shareable Images for Social Media

Recently, I was scrolling through my Twitter feed, and a Tweet caught my eye. It caught my eye because it had an image attached to it. The image drew me in enough that I found myself clicking on the link to the content.

This type of thing happens all the time on Facebook as well. Think about the posts that catch your eye. What posts do you most often share? I’d be willing to bet posts with images are high on that list.

Images catch our eye when we are in a hurry, and we are scanning our social media feeds. Something that has a compelling image will catch our attention.

Here are three simple steps to create shareable images that get your content noticed.

Step One - Use Content Bites in Your Image

If you have a great quote in your content, create a quote image. Your image could include a picture of the person being quoted if they are highly recognizable, or it could simply be a colorful background and the text of the quote.

If your post is a list post such as “Ten Ways to Boost Attendance At Your Event” you can create ten different images using your content. Images that will entice people to read more for the rest of your tips.

Step Two - Size Your Image For the Platform

It’s not enough to create an image; your image has to be formatted to fit the social media platform on which you are sharing it. You don’t want the punch line getting cut off because you sized the image for Twitter and not for Facebook.

While every platform will tell you exactly what size your image needs to be, you don’t have to be a graphic designer to create eye-catching images. Tools such as Canva will help you create perfectly sized images using templates or your own design in just minutes.

Step Three - Make Sure the Image Can Standalone

Imagine creating an awesome image that resonates with your audience and gets shared everywhere. Now imagine that image only contains a quote you pulled from your content. People are sharing your image, but not the link to your content. Your image has gone viral which is great, but no one knows where it came from which is tragic.

Make sure you include a short link on your image that directs people to your content or a landing page that includes a call to action. At the very least, make sure your event brand is part of your image.

Bonus Step:

Share the images you’ve created, with the person you are quoting. Invite them to use that image to share your content with their social networks.

Follow these simple steps and you’ll be well on your way to getting your content noticed. If you're lucky enough to have your image go viral, everyone will know where it came from!
