Meet Damian Olsen, Stadium, Arenas and Racing Industry Expert

Damian Olsen

What do you like most about working for the industry?

I'm sure many people in the events industry are drawn to the excitement and stay for the relationships you form over the years. I consider myself lucky to know a vast number of people in venues across Australia and indeed the world, many of whom I consider friends.

How and why did you end up working in the events industry?

I saw a job advertised at Suncorp Stadium and thought it sounded exciting. I applied for the job but didn't get it. When I reached out for reasons why I missed out they gave me good honest feedback, so I set about getting that experience. We stayed connected and a year or two later another opportunity came up for a 3-month contract. I applied, got the gig and I stayed for another 13 years!

What are you most looking forward to doing in your role?

Anyone in the industry knows how busy it can be, so I have always been passionate about making systems more efficient and enhancing the customer experience. My role with Ungerboeck allows me to do exactly that.

What are 3 words to describe Ungerboeck?

Comprehensive, Innovative, Supportive

What have been the lessons you’ve learned in the events industry?

I've been lucky to work with some incredible people who have taught me a lot about the industry. I've also made my share of mistakes along the way, so they are always lessons you never forget but to me one of the most important lessons is to continue to challenge the way we do things instead of doing what you've always done.

What is your best memory working in the events and venues industry?

Wow! That is a tough one. The recent floods reminded me of 2011 when I was at Suncorp Stadium. Some highly creative solutions to ensure we could continue hosting events when so much of the infrastructure was wiped out. Entertaining guests at a Hilltop Hoods concert in their hometown of Adelaide was a moment I had to pinch myself to believe that this was work! If you live in Brisbane and you haven't been to Winter or Spring racing carnival at Brisbane Racing Club, then add that to your list. Being on the finishing post for Stradbroke Day is a bucket list item.

What keeps you busy, outside of work?

I have a wife and 3 children so outside of work I'm busy driving to and from kid's sport and/or parties. We try to get away on camping trips as much as possible but funding those trips on a fulltime basis is a challenge, I'm sure many are trying to solve!

What’s the best concert you have ever been to?

Another tough question but hard to nail down to just one. I got my start at Suncorp Stadium to help deliver their first ever concert which was Robbie Williams. We ended selling two back-to-back nights with over 50k at each show, so I'll never forget that. I've also seen John Farnham a few times and if you haven't already seen him, do it! He is awesome! U2 at the Adelaide Oval was also incredible. I know it isn't a concert but UFC at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre is one of my favourite event moments, Harvey Lister and Tim Worton took me ringside and introduced me to some huge identities. Staying focused on a conversation whilst someone is being choked out against the cage next to you doesn’t happen every day.

Tell us something about yourself that others might not know?

I've recently joined a cycling club so very early on most Saturday mornings I'm battling for bragging rights in D grade but my goal is ride in C grade without being embarrassed before the year is over.
